| Telemedicine Assessment |
Project BackgroundWhile Telehealth projects (usually located in urban healthcare centres) in East Africa, South Africa and Burkina Faso have succeeded in establishing networks between Universities, there is no relation between them and isolated rural communities where the need for these medical services is even greater. They therefore do not address the problem of rural development and the accessibility of adequate health information and its distribution between urban and rural communities. Accurate health information and diagnostic services in underdeveloped and rural areas are critical in these developing countries. There is therefore, a great need to revisit telehealth activities in Africa to determine their impact on the health care delivery system for the purpose of developing a common model that would address equity in information distribution, cost-effectiveness and sustainability. Problem StatementHow can ICTs be used to support the sustainable delivery of healthcare to/in resource poor environments?
